MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The Meridian City Council has rejected several key appointments submitted by Mayor Jimmie Smith.

Among those are Police Chief Chris Read, Parks and Recreation Director Trent Posey, Ed Skipper (chief administrative officer candidate) and Tim Miller (fire chief candidate). Salaries surfaced as an issue at a special council meeting Tuesday morning.

The council rejected Community Development Director Laura Carmichael on a 1-4 vote, with George Thomas voting yes. However, Carmichael had already resigned before the vote Tuesday and had accepted a new job elsewhere. Carmichael said she told the council about this at the last city council meeting.

Four other positions that fall under the mayor’s authority were approved.
Doug Stephens remains as public safety director and Brandye Latimer stays as chief financial officer and city clerk. Both are holdovers from the Bland administration.
David Hodge was confirmed as public works director. Dustin Markham was confirmed as municipal judge.
