Escaped inmate recaptured
The prison escapee led law enforcement on a five-day, 900-mile manhunt
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - An East Mississippi Correctional Facility inmate who escaped Friday while being transported to his mother’s funeral in Belzoni is back in custody.
Garnett Hughes, 33, was arrested by U.S. marshals in Akron, Ohio, Tuesday. Authorities say Hughes led law enforcement on a five-day, 900-mile manhunt. Authorities say Hughes’ girlfriend was also arrested for aiding in his escape. She was identified as 51-year old Yvette Mendoza.
Hughes is serving multiple life sentence for kidnapping and sexual battery in Alcorn County. He was sentenced in 2014.
MDOC investigators worked with the U.S. Marshal Service in Mississippi to re-arrest Hughes along with the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. The Ohio marshals who surprised Hughes this morning say the inmate was still wearing one of his handcuffs.
At the time of his escape, Hughes was housed at East Mississippi Correctional Facility which is operated and managed by the private prison management firm Management Training Company, or MTC, based in Utah.
Director of MDOC Investigative Division John Hunt said the investigation is ongoing.
